As the days grow shorter and the temperatures start to drop, rich, spicy scents naturally find their way back into our homes. Inspired by comforting autumnal drinks, the Macchiato Spiced Pumpkin candle combines a generous aesthetic with a warm fragrance to create a truly seasonal decoration.

In this tutorial, discover how to make a macchiato-style candle with a gradient of pumpkin hues, a swirl of wax and small moulded coffee beans. An ideal creation to bring a cosy atmosphere to your home or to make an original handmade gift.

Why the Macchiato Spiced Pumpkin candle is so popular in autumn

This candle plays on two key aspects: its visual appeal and the sensory experience it offers.

Its transparent jar showcases the different layers of wax and the orange gradient, which immediately brings to mind the colours of pumpkins and autumn leaves. The whipped cream-style wax, meanwhile, adds volume and replicates the generous appearance of a drink served in a coffee shop. The small moulded coffee beans complete the design and enhance the illusion.

In terms of fragrance, Macchiato Spiced Pumpkin evokes a rich, spicy aroma perfectly suited to the season. Its notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla create a warm and comforting atmosphere, ideal as the first chills of winter set in.

Step 1: Prepare the container and fit the wick

  1. Start by preparing your container so that it is perfectly clean, dry and ready to hold the wax.
  2. Secure the 33/18 wick to a self-adhesive disc, then position the wick in the centre of the container. Next, place a wick centre on top of the glass to keep the wick perfectly straight throughout the process.

Step 2: Make the wax coffee beans

  1. Melt approximately 10 g of olive wax for moulded candles. This quantity can be adjusted depending on how many coffee beans you wish to add to your decoration.

  2. Once the wax has completely melted, gradually stir in a few grains of brown colourant until you achieve the desired shade. Mix thoroughly to ensure the colour is evenly distributed. The recommended proportion for colourant grains is 0.5 per cent.

  3. Next, pour the coloured wax into the ‘Coffee Beans’ mould and leave the decorations to cool until they have completely set before removing them from the mould. Keep a small amount of this brown wax. You’ll use it later to create the decorative glaze for the whipped cream.

Step 3: prepare the wax for the container

  1. Melt the C3 soya wax required to make your candle. Allow enough wax to fill part of the container whilst keeping enough left over to make the whipped cream.
  2. Monitor the temperature using a thermometer and follow the recommendations for melting, adding fragrance and pouring that apply to the wax you are using.
  3. Add the Macchiato Spiced Pumpkin fragrance at your chosen concentration, following the fragrance’s usage guidelines and taking into account your wax’s absorption capacity. Stir for long enough to ensure the fragrance is evenly distributed.

Step 4: Create an autumn-coloured gradient

  1. Pour an initial amount of wax into the bottom of the container, then add a few drops or a small amount of orange colouring, along with a touch of black colouring. Mix gently using a wooden skewer, without trying to achieve a perfectly uniform colour. The aim is precisely to retain different shades to create a more natural-looking effect.

  2. Gently swirl the container round so that the gradient rises up the sides to about halfway up the glass. Leave this first section to set.

  3. Then pour in wax until it slightly exceeds half the height of the container, whilst leaving enough space for the whipped cream and decorations. Allow the wax to cool and set again before continuing.

Step 5: preparing the wax whipped cream

  1. Use the rest of your C3 soya wax to make the whipped wax. The success of this step depends mainly on the texture of the wax. It must cool sufficiently to become creamy and workable with a piping bag, whilst remaining supple enough to be shaped.

To master this technique, take a look at our article on making whipped wax. You’ll find all the tips you need to achieve a texture suitable for piping. If you’d like to try different styles of design, our previous recipe for tropical monoi flower candles might also inspire you.

Step 6: Pipe and decorate the candle

  1. Transfer your whipped wax mixture into a piping bag fitted with the nozzle of your choice. Pipe the wax generously onto the top of the candle, building up volume. You can make several strokes to achieve a finish similar to real whipped cream.

  2. If necessary, gently warm the remaining brown wax that you set aside earlier, then pour it delicately over the ‘whipped cream’ to create a coulis effect.

  3. Finally, remove your wax coffee beans from the mould and arrange them on top as you wish. Just a few beans are enough to add the finishing touch and instantly evoke the world of macchiato.

A gourmet candle to celebrate autumn

With its pumpkin-coloured hues, whipped cream effect and tiny coffee beans, this candle easily becomes a standout feature in any autumnal décor. Placed on a coffee table, a shelf or at the centre of a seasonal arrangement, it pairs perfectly with natural materials, warm colours and coffee-shop-inspired atmospheres.

You can also personalise your creation by adjusting the intensity of the orange hues, the shape of the dip or the arrangement of the wax decorations. Always leave enough space around the wick and remove any decorative elements that might interfere with burning before lighting the candle.
